Incident Tech's gTar gets teased, remains largely silent (video)
What you see above is the gTar, an upcoming electronic musical instrument from Bay Area-based startup, Incident Technologies. It's got what appears to be an iPhone docked in the pick-guard and it looks pretty cool lit up in the teaser video after the break. Beyond that, there's not a ton of information about the thing available online, but we did some digging and have pieced together a pretty good idea about the thing. The device made an appearance at South by Southwest earlier this month, and bits and pieces have made their way into the web by way of startup site AngelList and social networks like Facebook, Twitter and, of course, YouTube. A posting on the former describes it as "a consumer electronics device that enables an interactive music entertainment experience to anyone without any kind of previous musical knowledge."
From the looks of it, the thing is a little bit Guitar Apprentice and a little bit Tabber. Unlike the plasticky Guitar Apprentice, however, this device looks like a genuine guitar (strings and all), albeit one with a light up fretboard for Tabber-like educational purposes and a "docked mobile device." The guitar also makes it possible to share music socially, though it's not entirely clear whether this is accomplished via the docked smartphone or an external output like a PC, though given the company's connections to the developer community, we suspect that both will be options, be it through built-in functionality or available APIs. The gTar is also being positioned as a music creation device, rather than simply an educational tool (à la Tabber) or a simple overblown Guitar Hero-style controller.
Check out a flashy, if rather uninformative teaser after the break.

L'Arc En Ciel's Madison Square Garden Show Is A 'Turning Point'
Rock band will become first Japanese act to headline MSG on Sunday, which frontman Hyde calls 'highlight' of a 20-year career.

On Sunday, Japanese art-rock act L'Arc en Ciel — French for "the rainbow," naturally — will make history when they become the first band from their homeland to headline a show at New York's iconic Madison Square Garden.
The show, part of the band's 20th anniversary world tour, was originally scheduled for the much smaller Theater at MSG, but due to overwhelming demand from their long-suffering Stateside fans — L'Arc have played just one North American show in their two decades of existence, a 2004 gig at an Otaku convention in Baltimore — organizers moved it to the venerable Garden arena. And for a band that has had approximately zero promotion here in the U.S., it is understandably a very big deal, as frontman Hyde told MTV News (via translator) on Friday (March 23).
"This is huge for our band to perform at the world-famous Madison Square Garden, so I want to make sure we give you the very best show for the American audience. ... I want to take the very best of everything we've done in Japan and put it in this show," Hyde said. "It's so hard for a Japanese act to be successful in America, but we were given this opportunity, so that means there is a possibility for us to break in the American market. I definitely feel lucky to be here after 20 years as a band."
And for Hyde, who grew up listening to "L.A. metal ... Guns N' Roses and Mötley Crüe," the opportunity to take the stage at the World's Most Famous Arena has an even bigger significance. Mostly because, when L'Arc first started 20 years ago in Osaka, Hyde never thought he'd be singing before 19,000 folks in New York City. He wasn't even sure he'd ever make it to Tokyo.
"This world tour is definitely one of the highlights of our career. It ranks at the top of all the highlights, but amongst it all, this Madison Square Garden performance is such a turning point in our career, so we look forward to it," he said. "It's very hard to predict what's next for L'Arc en Ciel, and for us, it's almost a miracle we've lasted this long. When we first started, I was just happy to be able to eat. Our goal back then was to be #1 in Osaka so that people in Tokyo could hear about us."
Luckily, he and the band will have a few days after the show to soak up the New York City experience. Of course, thanks to the warm weather, there's one aspect of the city he's sadly already missed out on.
"We're going to be here in New York for a week, and I was looking forward to the steam coming up from the streets, but I haven't seen that yet, what happened to that?" he laughed of the blasts of warm air that often spring up from subway grates. "Also, I watched a lot of Billy Joel videos growing up, and I would love to see some of the scenes from those videos."

Kermit The Frog Pitches 'Muppets' Special Features
'You can rewind it. You can hit play. You can pause,' famous frog tells MTV News of the Blu-ray, available Tuesday.

It's time to play the music, it's time to light the lights! It's time to meet "The Muppets," available on Blu-ray this Tuesday (March 20)!
OK, our rhyming skills could use some work, clearly. Perhaps it's best to leave those kinds of hijinks to the Muppets themselves. Thankfully for all of us, we did just that when Kermit the Frog and Walter, the newest member of the pint-sized gang, swung by the MTV Newsroom last week to tell us all about their imminent home-video release. According to the frog and his new pal, "The Muppets" comes with all sorts of special features, some that you normally wouldn't think to mention when pitching Blu-ray and DVD discs to the folks at home.
"You can rewind it. You can hit play. You can pause," Kermit offered not so helpfully when we asked him about some of the features we'll find on the "Muppets" Blu-ray. "Another thing I want to tell you: One special feature about Blu-ray is that you can use it as a coaster, and it'll still play. It works very well!"
On a more serious note — as serious as things get with Kermit and Walter, that is — the Blu-ray comes packed with extra features including an intermission sequence that's activated when the viewer hits pause. "The intermission is great," Kermit gushed. "We all jump in and do silly things for you during the intermission ... and we've never done silly things before!"
The coming "Muppets" release also hosts some deleted scenes, including one that expands upon the film's villain, Tex Richman, and his reasons for hating the Muppets so darn much.
"It's this whole big music video," Walter explained. "In the final cut of the film, you just see a couple of minutes. But on the DVD, you get the whole shebang!"
Though this week's home-video release is the next place you'll be able to see the Muppets, it won't be their last appearance. Both Kermit and Walter are quite convinced that further adventures are coming our way very soon. In fact, Walter's already pitching sequels!
"One script I'm pitching now: 'Extremely Short and Incredibly Cute,' " he joked.
"We feel certain there will be another movie," Kermit said. "And who knows? We might have the opportunity to bring something back like 'The Muppet Show.' That would be fun! But we're taking it one step at a time."
Tell us what you think of "The Muppets" in the comments section and on Twitter!
